Familiarize Your Baby with Mother's Breast to Prevent Confused Nipples

Most health professionals do not recommend giving a pacifier to babies before they are around 4-6 weeks old. This is so that the baby has an established nursing ability. Conversely, babies who are given a pacifier too soon can become more likely to suckle from a pacifier than from a mother's breast. Eventually, the baby experiences a condition called nipple confusion. A baby is said to be confused about her nipples when she has difficulty putting Mother's nipples in her mouth and sucking them because she has previously been accustomed to using nipples. There is a difference between sucking pacifiers that are deliberately designed to make it easier for babies to drink than sucking nipples. Basically, babies need hard work to suck Mother's nipples continuously so that Mother's Milk (ASI) can flow smoothly.

Does Your Baby Have Confused Nipples?

Here are some signs of a baby having nipple confusion.
  • The baby does not open his mouth wide when suckling from the breast so he can not get a lot of breast milk and Mother's nipples will feel very painful.
  • When sucking milk, the baby pushes his tongue so that the nipple of the Mother out of the baby's mouth.
  • Babies become frustrated or grumpy due to breast milk Mother does not immediately come out because it takes a straw for 1-2 minutes for milk to come out.
  • Older babies can have problems if the mother's milk is not always available, for example due to changes in schedule when the mother returns to work.

So The Baby Does Not Confuse Nipples

If your baby has difficulty breastfeeding after you introduce the bottle, this is what you can do.
  • Practice good breastfeeding techniques and learn comfortable breastfeeding positions.
  • Be firm with your determination to breastfeed if you can, but if breastfeeding directly is not an option, try to limit the use of pacifiers only when you are not at home to breastfeed.
  • Do not wait until the new starving baby is breastfeeding. Instead, try to always spend time together for the process of breastfeeding. In this way, Mother and baby have more patience to breastfeed properly.
  • If your baby looks frustrated because breast milk is not available, anticipate pumping Mother's breast first until the milk comes out a little before breastfeeding the baby.
  • Before introducing a pacifier or bottle to the baby, wait until the baby's ability to suckle from the breast of the Mother is well formed, usually when the baby is 4-6 weeks old.
  • Regarding pacifiers for the first time, fill the bottle with breast milk. This is because babies are familiar with the aroma and taste of breast milk. Meanwhile, if you intend to continue breastfeeding, use a breast pump to maintain the supply of milk.
  • Let other people give the pacifier to the baby so that the baby will associate the scent of the mother with breastfeeding.
  • Seek help from a lactation consultant if the baby appears to have a tendency to choose bottles over breasts. A breastfeeding counselor will help Mother and baby to find a solution so that the baby prefers to suckle directly from the breast.
  • In the condition of premature babies, initially it may be breastfeeding because the ability to suck the breast is not fully formed. Even so, it does not mean forever he can not suckle from the breast. Over time, he will turn into a different baby. Try to feed it directly from the breast when it's a little older.
Breastfeeding from the breast is a strong natural reflex in infants. Babies are born with the ability to suck the breast of her mother's nipples. But keep in mind that breastfeeding is a learning process that will take time. Therefore, the best way to avoid nipple confusion is by not giving a pacifier as a medium for breastfeeding. Use other media such as cup feeders, shot glass, pipettes, or syringes.
